State Food and Consumer Service of Ivano-Frankivsk warns of Colorado potato beetle invasion

In the Ivano-Frankivsk region, gardeners are warned about a possible invasion of Colorado potato beetles due to their successful wintering in 2024. Only 7% of the population died from the warm winter, which favorably affected their numbers.

State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection warns about pests.

Halyna Danyliuk from the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection in the region explains that these pests usually overwinter at a depth of 10 to 50 centimeters in the soil and wake up in the spring after rains and warm weather. They are most active at temperatures above 15°.

It is assumed that their massive emergence can be a serious problem for gardeners, particularly those who grow potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers.

How do you deal with the colorado potato beetle?

Halyna Danyliuk recommends using chemical insecticides to combat Colorado potato beetles effectively. The beetles are very resistant to drugs, so it is recommended to combine different types of insecticides or use a contact-systemic agent and then a systemic one to avoid pests getting used to one drug. It is also important to choose the best time to treat plants—morning or evening, when the beetles are most active.

Danyliuk also notes that biological preparations based on fungi and bacteria are effective because beetles are not used to them and are safe for the environment and products.

Earlier, it was published that after the accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, five villages in the Ivano-Frankivsk region became victims of radiation contamination. These villages include Stetseva, Stetsivka, Rusiv, Potichok, and Pidvysoke of the Sniatyn community.
